In this episode of stark und unsicher (strong and insecure), I am visiting Chantea at the NGO 'Daughters of Cambodia.' She is the manager of the Visitor Centre in Phnom Penh. I met her there during my visit in November 2022 and spontaneously asked her if she would be willing to do an interview – she said yes! :-)

The people of Cambodia have endured incredibly difficult times. Between 1975 and 1979, the country was ruled by the Khmer Rouge, a radical guerrilla movement. Their goal was to establish an agrarian state, forcing everyone from the cities (such as Phnom Penh) into the countryside to work as slaves in the fields. Anyone who resisted was killed. Educated individuals were murdered immediately, as they were seen as obstacles to the regime's plans. To this day, the population continues to suffer from the legacy of this era.

Until only a few years ago, education was hardly accessible for girls and women. Many young women work in prostitution (30 percent of whom are under the age of 18) and face contempt and rejection from society. Finding a way out is nearly impossible.

The organization "Daughters of Cambodia" supports women in finding a path out of prostitution. This includes education, the opportunity to discover their own strengths, building self-esteem, and establishing a new social network. Chantea took the time to tell us about her work and her own professional journey.

Chantea and I wish you a wonderful listening experience and plenty of inspiration!
